Twitter: Is Spreading Stupidity

stupidThere is a comment thread on a blog post I have been following. Apparently, a controversy is brewing about Twitter; some people think that Twitter is causing people to become stupid. So, I simply had to investigate this statement. I wanted to know if this thought is based on some truth, or if it is just an opinion. The first thing I did was look into the reasons that might make people believe it to be true.

Here are some theories that could be making people who use Twitter dumber:

-Users tend to be lazy in the subjects of spelling and grammar.

-People spread “truths” that are really opinions.

-People post “facts” that are inaccurate and untrue.

-Too much “leet-speak” or typing in a texting fashion.

-Annoying spammer accounts.

-Inappropriate pornographic accounts that are against TOS.

-Multiple one-person spam accounts. For example, JohnQ1, JohnQ2, JohnQ3 and so on.

The question is if a person does all of these thing, are they really an idiot or are they just lazy because they are on the internet? Or, are they trying to post their tweet in a hurry because they are busy? Is it only young people who don’t care? Maybe they are socially, economically, or educationally challenged? If you consider it, “stupid” can mean something different to everybody, so we will not try to explain the word “stupid” in this article.

However, it can be agreed upon that one, there is stupid people tweeting on Twitter, and two, the atmosphere of Twitter probably contributes to laziness. This is why many people type without thinking first. The problem with this is that some people do not know that any tweets made can be deleted.

My final theory is that even though many people who tweet on Twitter are stupid, there is no concrete evidence that they are dumb due to Twitter usage. I think there are morons everywhere you go, and even without Twitter, idiots just tend to gather together in the same places at the same times. Twitter should not be considered the root cause; stupidity is a common theme among many groups of people throughout history.
