Tips For Marketing Through Twitter
Achieving marketing success in any venue is only possible by sticking to some rules of etiquette. While the rules may modify and change depending on the situation, being respectful and courteous to our fellow man is essential. In this day of quick fixes and so many technological venues to advertise our business, we still must adhere to these rules. If Twitter has become a part of your marketing plan, then it is important to understand the rules that go along with each tweet. While your posts may be restricted to 140 characters, it is important to make those characters count and to not violate any of the unspoken Twitter rules of etiquette.
One of the first rules is not to spam; ever. If you commit this unforgiveable act, not only will you lose followers and stop gaining new ones, the ones you have will ignore your posts. Nobody likes spammers or receiving spam in their inboxes; whether it’s through email or tweets. Generic posts like “read my new blog” are considered spam. If your account has you following a large quantity of people but few are following you back, then potential followers will consider you a spammer and think twice before they follow. When you are composing your tweets, make sure that you keep them in letter form. Don’t use abbreviation or texting lingo. A pot of gold for any tweeter is when you find a good tweet that was posted by someone else. You are more than welcome to reuse these posts but be sure to give proper credit. You are supposed to use the following line to give credit: retweet@username:originaltweet.
Tweets are sent through SMS systems so it is important to stick to 140 characters. While this is all that Twitter will allow, it is also the limit that will fit through the SMS system. Think through your post carefully; most people want to understand what you are saying through one post and not by continuing through a URL link. An important part of Twitter etiquette is to follow the people who follow you. Unlike Facebook or Myspace, this is not an automatic thing. Anyone can follow you, but you are not automatically linked to follow them. The only times where this may not be appropriate is if you have a massive amount of followers and being linked to all of them would prove to be confusing. Use your own judgment on this one.
Twitter can be a powerful tool for any marketing plan. As long as you stick to the rules of Twitter etiquette, your business can prove to be successfully marketed through Twitter and any other marketing venue.
