Increasing Personal Safety Through the Use of Twitter

twitter safetyThe daughter of my friend lives alone in an apartment in Delhi, and her job requires her to work late hours, so she frequently arrives home at all sorts of hours in the middle of the night. Because she lives in a well-populated city, and she constantly travels to other cities by train and airplane, she needs to know how to take the right precautions while in Delhi and beyond.

Now, her mother and father reside in Hyderabad. So, when she plans to travel by taxi or car, she will text HM. GN. to her parents after getting back home. This stands for, Home Safe. Good Night. She also makes sure to inform her parents of any changes in her routine. But, what if she had no family or people that were around to keep tabs on her? What should she do? One option is to record all of her movements and put that log away where it will be safe. This can be compared to to an airplane’s black box.

Since the introduction of Twitter, she now has a far superior option; to get a private, personal account through Twitter that is only visible to family members and close friends. She can send SMS texts from her mobile phone to update her family and friends of her whereabouts. These posts can be copied and shared with all of her friends that follow her. This is the perfect plan for people who live by themselves, such as single, young ladies and senior citizens. This type of security can not possibley be measured.

If something terrible was to ever happen, these “logs” kept on Twitter can be viewed by the authorities, which could provide a vast amount of clues. And, the best fact about SMS texts is that no one can hear you because you are not talking. You do not have to worry about the taxi cab driver overhearing you; in fact, it is possible to record the taxi number and the driver would have no idea.

I have a friend that always carries an spair pair of glasses whenever he is traveling; this habit can also be used with the mobile phone. Mobile phones are useful for sending tweets while away from your computer.

Shouldn’t we get the most out of the technology available to us? If any of you have had a similar experience, it would be wonderful if you would share it.
